Despite decreased passenger loads due to the COVID-19 pandemic, TSA officers across the country discovered firearms in carry-on luggage at a rate twice what it was in 2019 and the highest rate since the agency’s inception. Last year, TSA detected 10.2 firearms per million passengers screened as compared to 5 firearms per million passengers screened in 2019. Statewide in 2020, TSA screened approximately 2.6 million departing travelers at the six commercial South Carolina airports, about 42.6 percent of the total number screened in 2019. Nationwide, a firearm was detected for every 99,583 passengers screened last year. The rate for South Carolina was even higher, with a firearm discovered per every 63,517 passengers screened.
When the opportunity came to apply for reimbursement of funds related to COVID-19, many businesses were almost automatically rejected.
During Mondayâs Metropolis City Council meeting, corporate counsel Rick Abell said local assistance is now available and many businesses have already submitted their applications.
The application for the City of Metropolis Economic Support Grant is available on the City of Metropolis, Metropolis Chamber of Commerce and Metropolis Tourism websites and Mayor Billy McDanielâs Facebook page. Applications will be approved on a first come, first serve basis.
For qualifying businesses in the City of Metropolis, the grant provides reimbursement toward expenses incurred because of the pandemic. COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The Christmas holidays brought record numbers of crowds to airports across the country, with TSA saying that on December 27 nearly 1.3 million travelers were screened. It’s the highest number in a single day since the pandemic began.
Officials with the Columbia Metropolitan Airport said the airport saw about 6,000 travelers during the week of Christmas, which is also a record week for the airport since the pandemic began in March.
